NORMAN D. MEANS, MD, FCAP
Decoration of the body with jewelry and tattooing has seen an explosion in popularity in the past decade. Called “body modification” by many, the complexity, reach and acceptability of body modification has reached levels not previously seen in modern Western society. As an expression of individuality, many people are now choosing to have body jewelry placed. When making such an important decision, many factors must be considered. First and foremost, safety must be at the top of any decision to have a piercing performed. As with any medical procedure, even the simpler piercings such as the earlobe or belly button have medical risks, and the prospective piercee should carefully consider the qualifications, skill and judgment of the person doing the piercing. Also ask your piercer if he or she can properly address the common complications of the piercing. Additionally just because a piercing CAN be performed, doesn’t mean it SHOULD be performed. Not every piercing is for everyone; the suitability of a particular piercing depends on the details of the individual’s anatomy.
Also, some areas are inherently more susceptible to problems. An excellent example is placing a piercing through cartilage, such as on the ear. With its poor blood supply, cartilage is much more likely to become infected or suffer poor or delayed healing than tissues with better blood supply. Finally, are you really ready to be pierced? Piercings take a great deal of effort and patience to maximize the chance of proper healing. Those who are in a great “hurry” to get a piercing, who are not willing to address minor healing issues or who are not willing to meticulously care for the piercing every day are poor candidates for any form of body modification, and should not undergo body piercing. Ultimately, the decision to undergo body piercing is highly personal and should only be made after a lengthy discussion of the risks and benefits with your piercer and careful thought.
